La Palma

Paradise Island

Enjoy, Discover and Experience…

A small continent, that is what La Palma is… The most beautiful and unique island of the Canary Islands. With an extreme variety of landscapes and climate zones on a small surface. Subtropical forests, green valleys, steep cliffs, a large number of volcanoes and of course the impressive Caldera de Taburiente… a canyon that is more than 2000 meters high.

But La Palma has more to offer than a fabulous nature….
You will encounter beautiful beaches, cosy promenades, villages and small towns with an amazing laid back atmosphere. Even as lots of markets and museums and excursions.

In contrast to other Canary Islands like Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote, La Palma remains pure and authentic. Without mass tourism, you can really enjoy the laid back island mentality.

The people are friendly and helpful. Focused on the local agricultural economy including, of course, the cultivation of the Canary Island banana and production of fine wines. This healthy balance is perfect for the tourism. Here you don’t encounter pushy salespeople trying to take advantage of tourists.

Together with the unique atmosphere due to the mix of Spanish and South American influences, this makes La Palma a true dream destination for your holiday.

CLIMATE

Perfect conditions during winter and summer…

On La Palma the temperatures are perfect, whole year round. On our Finca, temperatures of 19 to 24 in winter and 25 to 30 degrees in summer, are normal. Colder or warmer is simply rare

La Palma is known as ‘ La Isla Verde ‘ which means the Green Island. Therefore, it is often said that La Palma is cooler and wetter as the islands of Tenerife and Lanzarote, but that is only partially true…

Due to its location and height differences La Palma has a wide variety of micro-climates. High in the mountains can be pretty chilly in winter and it rains in the North more often, while in the South and especially in the West it is sunny, warm and dry. The East (including Los Cancajos) has a more cloudy climate.

Therefore, our Finca Sueño La Palma is ideally located … on the sunny west side between Puerto Naos and Tazacorte, one of the places with the most sun hours of Europe.
The temperatures in this zone are similar to the tourist zone of South Tenerife. So it is an ideal holiday destination all year round. With pleasant temperatures in winter and also not too hot in the summer.

NATURE

Versatile and impressive…

With so many different landscapes it is quite a challenge to describe the nature of La Palma briefly. To give you an impression, you will find below an overview of a number of different sceneries of La Palma

Caldera de Taburiente
One of the most beautiful national parks in Europe is the Caldera de Taburiente. An erosion crater with impressive almost straight ascending walls of 2000 meters high whit at the bottom always a water stream. A real pleasure to discover! This can be done by the scenic views from above or by one of the wonderful hikes through and along the stream bed.

Roof of the island
The highest point of the island is Roque de los Muchachos, with a height of more than 2400 metres. From here you have beautiful views of the Caldera, the entire island and the surrounding islands. Here are also 16 observatories. Many countries have here their huge telescope to study the universe. Right here because La Palma has one of the bright and clear skies of the world!

Subtropical forests
In the northeast of the island lies the ‘tropical rainforest’ of Europe: the damp and green Laurasilva forests. Here you will find many water sources and through the shorter and longer walking routes you can take a look at this beautiful forests with Laurel trees, ferns, mosses and water runs. Unique for Europe. A great experience to visit and what a contrast to the volcanic South!

Beautiful valleys
In the North and Northwest, the landscape contains rugged valleys and cliffs, remote villages, and deserted beaches … time seems to have stood still here. The valleys are covered with a great variety of plants and flowers and hidden in the landscape are agricultural fields and vineyards. There are numerous viewpoints, hiking trails and points of interest.

Volcanic mountains
The South of La Palma is covered with a chain of volcanoes. Here you will find ancient volcanoes covered with pine forests, but also all young volcanoes whose last erupted in 1949 (volcano San Juan) and in 1971 (Teneguia volcano). You can walk the whole volcano route, do a volcano climb or walk through the above-ground or underground lava tubes.

Valley of Aridane
Centrally located on the sunny west side of La Palma is the Valley of Aridane. This area is relatively flat and extends from the mountains of the Cumbre Nueva (famous for the waterfall of clouds) up to the beaches of Puerto Tazacorte and Puerto Naos. In the Valley are many villages, banana plantations, lava flows, the town of Los Llanos de Aridane and not to mention the finest beaches.

Under water …
The nature of La Palma runs until about 3500 metres below sea level. Fortunately, to discover the underwater world, you don’t have to go so deep. The coastline is full of beautifully coloured fish, fantastic to discover by snorkeling or diving. There are also many dolphins and whales for around La Palma which you almost always encounter during one of the boat excursions.

VILLAGES

Beautiful and laid back…

Scattered around the island you will find picturesque villages. Many of the villages have nice and sleepy village squares with beautiful old churches, surrounded by some shops, restaurants and bars with often over the weekend a local market. In some remote villages time seems to have stood still.

The largest towns are Santa Cruz in the East and Los Llanos de Aridane in the West. Santa Cruz is the capital and has beautiful old houses and squares. Los Llanos has beautiful parks, numerous shops and a charming plaza under beautiful Indian Laurel trees.
Puerto Naos, Puerto Tazacorte and Los Cancajos are the three main seaside resorts of the island with charming boulevards and numerous restaurants.
Scattered around the island you will find picturesque villages such as San Andrés, Garafia and Tijarafe. In some remote villages like El Tablado and Las Tricias time seems to have stood still. Many of the villages have nice and sleepy village squares with beautiful old churches, surrounded by some shops, restaurants and bars with often over the weekend a local market.

BEACHES

Enjoy and relax…

La Palma has beautiful, clean beaches of typical beautiful black lava sand. And even the most touristic beaches are never overcrowded. Enjoy the Sun, a good book or just enjoy swimming or snorkeling …

Food
The restaurants on La Palma are very diverse. You will find both cosy Canary restaurants as more international restaurants. On the menu of Canary restaurants you will find meat, fresh fish, paella, tortilla, papas arrugadas (potatoes with Peel boiled in salt water) and a host of other local dishes and tapas. In the more international restaurants you can also go for pastas, pizzas or the more northern European cuisine.
Also at midday you can go for a lunch or hot meal served at one of the restaurants or kiosks.
At a short distance from our Finca you will also find several restaurants.
But of course you can also make your own dinner with all the fantastic local products … With little effort, you can create a delicious meal with meat or fresh fish from the local butcher or market complemented by delicious fresh fruits and vegetables from a large vegetable trade nearby.

Drinks
On the road in a bar or restaurant you can always enjoy a local refreshment, such as a delicious fresh fruit juice, a coffee or of course a delicious glass of wine.
La Palma is known for its good white and red wines, coming from the sunny vineyards. Some of these types of wine come from grapes grown on volcanic soil, which gives a unique taste. You can also visit a so-called wine bodega to taste a number of wines.
Except wines, authentic liquors are also produced, like rum with honey.
La Palma has even 2 beer breweries with really delicious refreshing beers.
